Simbang Umaga will be made even more special by making your own Puto Bumbong in the comfort of your home. Not only will you and your loved ones be able to enjoy your own homemade Puto Bumbong, it can also become a new family tradition that brings everyone closer during the Christmas season.

While you can buy them during the cool hours of the morning when the sun is just starting to rise, nothing beats being able to savor it bite by bite while relaxing alongside your loved ones. You could even prepare and cook more if you run out, allowing you to have all the Puto Bumbong you want.

Puto Bumbong

Ingredients
  

For the Puto Bumbong:

  • 2 cups glutinous rice flour
  • 1 cup ricee flour
  • ½ tsp. salt
  • Water, to adjust
  • Violet food color

Toppings:

  • Grated coconut
  • Muscovado sugar
  • Cheese
  • Butter

For Wrapping:

  • Banana leaves

Instructions
 

  • In a bowl, add the rice flour and glutinous rice flour.
  • In a separate bowl, add the violet food color to water. Mix, then pour it into the rice flour mixture. Combine them together. Make sure the texture is chalky and not doughy.
  • Grab an ample amount of the purple rice flour and shape it into a log or ball, then grate it into another bowl. The texture once grated is similar to sand.
  • Brush the banana leaves with butter. Place an ample amount of the grated purple rice flour onto the banana leaf and roll it. Make sure there is space for the steam to enter. Make as much as you like.
  • Once all the banana leaves have been filled and rolled. Arrange it all into the steamer. Cover and let it steam.
  • When the Puto Bumbong is cooked, roll it out of the banana leaf carefully. Brush with salted butter and top with cheese, grated coconut, and muscovado sugar.
