Dr. Jose Rizal, the National Hero of the Philippines, is celebrating his birthday this June 19. Instead of livening this special day with spiels of some of his well-known writings, we have decided to share with everyone Chef Tatung’s renditions of dishes that he enjoyed.

Pansit

This is a local favorite that was introduced to the Philippines through the Chinese. It has various modern variations, but it can be said that every single one of them is delicious. Perhaps the version Jose Rizal favored the most still exists to this day.

Monggo Guisado

Not only is this dish quick and easy to eat, it is also a delight to the taste buds. The recipe can vary between households, but the deliciousness does not fade away. It is a healthy and economic dish that has lasted through the ages due to how cheap it has remained even with the passing of time.

Champorado

A delightful treat that can be enjoyed on any occasion and with any weather as it can be enjoyed hot or cold. Its sweetness can also be controlled with the amount of milk and sugar you include in each serving. Enjoy it as you wish because its finality is in your control.

These delicious dishes are some of the delightful treats that our hero savored during the days of Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo. It is a feast of the fast brough into the present by Chef Tatung. They may not be the original flavors Jose Rizal delighted in, but it is still the same dish. No matter the generation, they remain timeless.
