Bistek Tagalog is a beloved dish that carries the sweetness of onions, the saltiness of soy sauce, and the tanginess of vinegar. With these three to enhance its flavor, it has become a dish many delights in.

This recipe, instead of cooking with the commonly used beef or pork meat, makes use of a healthier alternative from the sea. With the ability of Pampano to absorb the flavors, every bite is filled with the delightfulness of the mouthwatering sweet and tangy soy-based sauce.

Fish Steak Tagalog

Ingredients

  • 1 pc. Pampano
  • Season with salt
  • 1 pack Maggi Magic Sarap
  • Oil, for frying

Fish Steak Sauce:

  • 4 Tbsps. soy sauce
  • 2 Tbsps. Maggi Magic Savor (Original)
  • 2 Tbsps. calamansi juice
  • 1 Tbsp. sugar
  • 1/2 cup water

Sauté:

  • 1 pc. white onion
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • Pampano
  • Fish steak sauce
  • Season with black pepper

Garnish:

  • Raw onion
  • Spring onion

Instructions

  • Prepare the Pampano by scoring it. Season it with salt and Maggi Magic Sarap. Set aside.
  • Cut the onions into rings.
  • Prepare the sauce. In a bowl, add soy sauce, Maggi Magic Savor, and calamansi juice. Season with sugar, and add water. Mix well. Set aside.
  • In a pan, heat the oil. Place the Pampano in the pan and fry until it becomes crisp on the outside, but fully cooked and juicy in the inside.
  • After a few minutes, check if the fish is cooked. Once cooked, set it aside.
  • Remove most of the oil from the pan. Sauté the garlic and onions. Continue sautéing until the onions become translucent, then add the sauce. Season with pepper.
  • Add the fried Pampano back into the pan. Let the fish soak in the sauce.
  • Once the sauce has seeped into the fish, remove the Pampano from the pan and put it on a plate. Top it with the sauce, then garnish with raw onions and spring onions.

Rather than making use of beef or pork to create Bistek Tagalog, try cooking Fish Steak Tagalog for a change. With the familiar flavors permeating through the fried Pampano, this may be the perfect chance to get everyone in the family hooked on eating fish. Just be careful of the fish bones because they can poke you pretty hard.
