Street food is an affordable and convenient way to satisfy your hunger pangs while on the way to your work or home. The vendor can settle anywhere and during certain times, which means that meeting them while walking on the road will depend on your luck.

With a vibrant outer layer, and a creamy inner layer, kwek-kwek is a filling snack that can scorch your mouth if you eat it immediately after frying. Let it cool down for a bit before dipping it in the Manong sauce and savoring it.

Ingredients
  

For the Kwek-Kwek:

  • 4 pcs. chicken eggs, boiled
  • 10 - 15 pcs. quail eggs, boiled
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 3/4 cup flour
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 tsp. fine black pepper
  • Pinch of orange flood coloring or annatto powder
  • 1/4 cup flour, for dredging
  • Cooking oil

For the Manong Sauce:

  • 6 Tbsps. sugar
  • 2 Tbsps. flour
  • 2 Tbsps. cornstarch
  • 6 Tbsps. soy sauce
  • 2 pcs. red chili, chopped
  • 1 pc. onion, minced
  • 1 tsp. garlic, minced
  • Cooking oil

Instructions
 

  • Start with making the Manong sauce. In a pot, add water, soy sauce, brown sugar, flour, and cornstarch. Mix, and allow it to boil and thicken.
  • Once everything has fully incorporated with each other, add the garlic, onion, red chili, and black pepper. Mix well. Let it simmer, then turn it off and allow it to cool down.
  • Prepare the batter. In a bowl, add the flour, cornstarch, salt, orange food color, and water. Mix it until it becomes smooth. Season with black pepper.
  • Dredge the hard-boiled eggs and quail eggs in flour.
  • Start with the chicken eggs. Place it in the batter. Make sure it is fully coated.
  • In a pot, heat the oil. Gently put the battered egg in and leave it to fry for 2 - 3 minutes. Once cooked, remove it from the pot and place it on a plate. Set aside.
  • The quail eggs are next. Place it in the batter. Make sure it is fully coated.
  • Gently put the battered quail egg in and let it cook. Once done, remove it from the pot and place it on the same plate with the eggs. Serve.

Even though it is cheap to buy kwek-kwek off the streets, cooking and enjoying it at home has a different allure. Not only is it freshly made, you can also personalize the sauce to your heart’s desire. Cooking it in your own kitchen means you can cook as many as you want, and at any time you want.
