Tusok-tusok is an affordable way to get a snack while on the streets. With a mobile stall fitted with a display rack to showcase the different skewers for sale, a stove and kawali to fry the balls in–tusok-tusok can be available anywhere, spotting one of them is as easy as pie.
The deliciousness contained within these fried balls cannot be denied, and with the addition of your desired sauce–it will be the most delightful snack for both you and your wallet. After all, a couple of sticks could fill you up, and it will not even cost more than fifty pesos.
Veggie Balls with 3 Sauces
Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup cornstarch
- 1 Tbsp. baking powder
- 2 Tbsps. sugar
- 1 pack Maggi Magic Sarap (optional)
- 1 tsp. black pepper
- 1 1/2 cup water
- 1/4 cup carrot, shredded
- 1/4 cup squash (kalabasa), shredded
- 4 Tbsps. spring onion, chopped
- Oil, for frying
Vinegar Dip:
- 1/2 cup vinegar
- 2 Tbsps. water
- 1 Tbsp. sugar
- 3 Tbsps. onion, minced
- 1 pc. red chili
- 1/2 tsp. salt
Sweet Sauce:
- 1/2 cup water
- 3 Tbsps. soy sauce
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 2 Tbsps. flour
- 3 Tbsps. water
Sweet Chili Sauce:
- 1/2 cup water
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1 Tbsp. banana ketchup
- 1 pc. red chili
- 1 tsp. chili flakes
- 4 Tbsps. vinegar
- Cornstarch and water, for slurry
- Salt and pepper
Instructions
- In a bowl, add flour, cornstarch, and baking powder. Season with salt, sugar, Maggi Magic Sarap, and black pepper. Add water. Make sure to add it little by little. Mix until the batter is smooth. Once the batter is smooth, add the carrot, squash, and spring onion. Let it rest. Set aside.
- Prepare the vinegar dip. In a bowl, add vinegar, water, sugar, onion, and red chili. Season with salt. Mix well.
- Prepare the sweet sauce. In a pot, add water, soy sauce, sugar, and flour-water slurry. Season with black pepper. Mix well. Let it cook until it thickens.
- Prepare the sweet chili sauce. In a pot, add water, sugar, banana ketchup, red chili, chili flakes, vinegar, and flour-water slurry. Season with salt and pepper. Mix well. Let it cook until it thickens.
- In a pan, heat the oil. Take a spoonful of the veggie ball mixture and place it into the pan. Fry until it becomes brown and crisp.
- Once cooked, remove it from the pan or pierce it with a stick right there and then. Dip it in your preferred sauce and enjoy.
